The Starks, the Lannisters, the Baratheons, the Targaryens, the Tyrells, the Greyjoys. These are just some of the many characters and family ties linked to the hit Emmy-winning HBO series, Game of Thrones. Created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and based on George R. R. Martin’s series of novels, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” GOT is a grand fantasy epic that has been masterly crafted for the small screen. This may be one of the greatest, if not the best, representation of medieval times that has been depicted on any film or T.V. show. This may be a bold statement coming from a viewer who, only until a couple of years ago, viewed the entire show for the first time ever on HBO. For about four or five weeks in March 2019, I was holding my breath, watching every episode with excitement, worry, and anxiety over the fate of many crucial characters and plot lines, as well as who will live and die in the fight for the iron throne. This series has several major stories, which are accompanied with great performances, battle sequences, special effects, production design, on-set locations, and so forth. Season 8, while not the best season (seasons 1-6 were lengthier and more in-depth compared to the shortened 7th and 8th seasons), was a satisfying conclusion overall to a series that’s challenging to close, and could have continued for many more seasons, but, I guess, it had to end sometime. Hopefully there will be prequels in which we learn more about certain characters and backstories involving the Seven Kingdoms.

Game of Thrones is a series about family, vengeance, and redemption, in which no characters are spared, and anything can happen to anyone at any moment. No one is safe, and nothing is guaranteed when watching what occurs to all these figures who are fighting within the Seven Kingdoms (continents of Westeros and Essos, in what is called “The Known World” in Martin’s books). After watching the entire series, including the final season and one of the most anticipated series finales, the best way to look back and describe this massive show is to reveal my favorite characters, as well as the most despicable.

  1. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington)-The “bastard” son of Ned Stark who became lord of the Night’s Watch, to returning home and becoming king of the North, Jon Snow was a tremendous fighter in battle, and a leader who spoke his mind when disputing those who go against him. It’s hard not to feel for Jon when having to make challenging decisions, and having to mind his place while being away from his family for a long period of time. From his personal relationships (Ygritte, Daenerys) to his hard-fought battles (the Night Walkers, the Wildlings), Jon was a brave survivor and a fierce warrior who continued to fight to the death as the show neared its end. Not only was Jon Snow (whose real name is Aegon Targaryen) the heir to the throne, but he was a commander who knew how to bring opposing sides together during moments of crisis. In order to defeat the Night Walkers, Jon had Daenerys and her armies join the Starks and his knights in Winterfell, along with the Wildlings. However, when Daenerys turned into a mad queen by destroying Cersei and her army in King’s Landing, along with numerous innocent lives, Jon had to make a difficult choice in deciding to join or fight her. Jon may have been the right man for the throne because he cared about bringing peace and order within the Seven Kingdoms, not destruction, but the sacrifices he made allowed his brother, Bran Stark, to become the primary ruler. Jon’s watch may have ended, but his hard-fought journey continues with the Wildlings.

2. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)-One of the most intelligent characters of the show, and easily the best Lannister, Tyrion was a great battle strategist (he had Stannis Baratheon’s ships blown up), an advisor to major leaders (Daenerys, before she went mad), and a deal maker who could pay others so that both sides had a chance to get what they want without fatalities. Although he’s a Lannister, Tyrion didn’t appear to be one, nor did he act like one, because he’s a small person who’s a better talker than a fighter. Sharing his intel with powerful forces was his area of expertise. Tyrion was very much a middle character because, with the exception of his brother Jaimie, his father Tywin and sister Cersei hated his guts. Tywin treated Tyrion like a bastard child due to his small stature, and Cersei blamed Tyrion for killing her son Joffrey and sending her daughter Myrcella away to the Martells. After all the despicable nonsense he was forced to endure from the Lannister family, we understood why he would help Daenerys Targaryen get the throne of the Seven Kingdoms. However, after witnessing Varys’s death, as well as the brutal destruction of King’s Landing, Tyrion ultimately went against the mad Daenerys, and convinced Jon Snow and the Starks (whom he has trusted throughout), as well as everyone else, to make a better path to secure the future of the Seven Kingdoms. His intelligent mind, grand speeches, and jokes have made Tyrian such a memorable part of this ensemble.

3. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)-The girl who never acted like one, and became a full-on female assassin. After nearly witnessing the deaths of her father (Ned), mother (Catelyn), and brother (Robb), as well as her sword instructor and other friends, Arya had to constantly move around from place to place, in search of food and shelter. She was the most badass female warrior (along with Daenerys) who learned to operate like a spy, impersonating others in order to get close to her enemies. Arya successfully had her vengeance, single handedly taking down Walder Fray and his army, and members of the Lannister army, including Little Finger. In season 8, Arya also had the pleasure of killing the Night King and numerous Night Walkers! This Stark had a strong case for the throne, but as Arya told everyone, she’s no lady. She’s much more suited to being a knight rather than a queen. Her journey to the West of Westeros would make a great sequel to this series.

4. Sandor “The Hound” Clegane (Rory McCann)-A crude and despicable knight under Cersei, the Hound redeemed himself by saving Sansa from knights who tried to rape her, and helped Arya become a better fighter. His companionship with Arya became a love/hate, father-daughter type relationship because both of them were seeking redemption and vengeance against their enemies, including Cersei. After the Hound was nearly killed after a massive fight against Brienne of Tarth, he recovered by living in a peaceful community headed by Brother Ray (Ian McShane), and became a more nuanced man by recognizing the wrong he did in the past, and to become tougher and more disciplined in the future. It was nice to see the Hound re-team with Arya in the battle of Winterfell in Season 8. It was also emotional when the Hound died (bravely), as he fought and killed his evil, murderous brother (The Mountain), bringing the Hound’s journey full circle.

5. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)-The timid woman who rose as the breaker of chains, mother of dragons, etc. Daenerys had to put up with slavery and empowering men (including her brother Viserys) throughout her young life. She became a true leader by learning how to command her armies and to abolish slavery wherever she conquered. Similar to Jon Snow, Daenerys was a warrior who fought for values she strongly believed in, and attacked her foes with full force. Although we learn that she turns out to be Jon’s aunt, they seem to be perfect for each other because they are after the same goal: for Daenerys to take the throne and to seek vengeance against those who destroyed their families. Or so I thought! Although Daenerys and her army were a pivotal part in defeating the Night Walkers, she lost many by her side, most especially Jorah and Missandei. Daenerys had every right to be upset, but this ultimately pushed her to the brink of madness and tyranny. In the second to last episode of the final season, Daenerys not only destroyed (deservedly) Cersei and her armies, but also (shockingly) the lives of many innocent people, including women and children, in King’s Landing. This showed that while Daenerys had succeeded in ending slavery and defeating her enemies throughout the course of the series, she was consumed by madness (like her father the Mad King) in her quest for the throne, making her become the enemy she fought her whole life to defeat.

6. Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)-He was Daenerys’s right hand man, and her most loyal companion, even though he lied by initially spying on her for the Lannisters. Nonetheless, he was another strong fighter that did anything to protect Daenerys because he loved her and believed that she was the rightful heir to the throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Sadly, Jorah left us in season 8, but he died bravely by taking numerous White Walkers with him.

7. Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham)-One of the most compassionate characters of the show, Davos, like Tyrian, was an intelligent advisor for powerful rulers, good or flawed. He served under the mad Stannis Baratheon in order to help him take his place on the throne after Robert Baratheon’s death. After nearly dying due to Tyrian’s masterful plan of blowing up many of Stannis’s ships in the sea, Davos continued to help Stannis until his downfall. Davos then believed in Jon Snow due to his strong abilities as a ruler, and seeing him come back from the dead. Davos’s most touching moments were with Shireen, Stannis’s daughter, who taught Davos how to read. Davos and Shireen had a father-daughter type relationship that was sadly torn when Shireen was sacrificed by Stannis and Melisandre.

8. Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)-Sansa, without question, was the most transformed character of the series. She went from a wannabe “damsel in distress” queen who loved Joffrey Baratheon (for God knows what reason) to a strong-willed strategist and ruler in Winterfell. She was also a survivor who endured torture and humility from cruel individuals (Joffrey, Ramsey Bolton, Cersei Lannister, Little Finger). After losing her parents and Robb, as well as reuniting with Jon and Arya, we see Sansa make more concise decisions when it came to battles, even though she wasn’t a fighter. Like Little Finger, who took advantage of her, Sansa got the better of him and Ramsey by turning on them with the assistance of her allies. She may have been capable of taking the iron throne, but she was truly fit to become queen of the North. While their arranged marriage seasons ago was forced, Sansa and Tyrion developed feelings for each other during the final season. Sansa’s love for her siblings also grew, especially after all the horrors they’ve been through.

9. Eddard “Ned” Stark (Sean Bean)-The protagonist in Season 1, Ned was the king of Winterfell, devoted to his wife, his children, his comrades (including the loco Robert Baratheon), and his kingdom. While he was a skilled ruler and fighter (see his fight against Jaime Lannister), what made Ned the most respectable character in the series was his determination to make peace and prevent war among the Seven Kingdoms. Seeking justice for his friend’s death (Jon Arynn), cherishing (most of) Robert’s final wishes, and attempting to unleash the truth about evil Cersei, Ned proved that he would risk anything and everything, especially to protect his children. Although his death was sudden and emotional (he was killed in Season 1 for God’s sake), Ned’s nobility, strength, and wisdom live on through his kids, especially Jon, Sansa, and Arya, who have become strong rulers and warriors because of their father.

10. Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance)-When we see Tywin for the first time, he’s skinning a deer with a knife, and breaking it apart with his bare hands. As he does this, he talks to his son Jaime about the importance of the family name, and that it lives on, no matter who dies or perishes, or whatever personal glories his children intend to seek. Tywin was a father and ruler who cared about controlling the Lannister family, and that they pay their debts, conquer the Seven Kingdoms, and destroy enemies who get in their way. Tywin hated Tyrian but treated every Lannister the same because they each have a role to play. Tywin did have small, pleasant moments with Arya Stark (without knowing her identity) because he recognized that she was a survivor and a fitting servant. What made Tywin one of the best characters was his relentless, no-nonsense attitude who knew how to command everyone in King’s Landing, before (deservedly) getting shot to death by Tyrian.

11. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)-One of the most hated characters for fighting Ned Stark and pushing Bran Stark out the window for seeing him and his sister Cersei get intimate. Jaime was not only one of the Starks’ biggest enemies, but also an enemy of Daenerys Targaryen for killing her father (the Mad King). However, ever since Brienne of Tarth was ordered by Caitlyn Stark to take Jaime to King’s Landing in exchange for the Stark sisters, Jaime became more vulnerable after losing a hand, as well as compassionate towards Brienne. Jaime and Brienne helped each other ever since they were held captive together, and became more respectful towards one another throughout the series. Jaime’s biggest weakness was Cersei because, while Jaime was an enemy of the Starks and Targaryens, he became more open and willing to help them take down the Night Walkers, while Cersei was a conniving woman incapable of trusting anyone. Cersei also hated Tyrian, while Jaime always supported his brother (even though he was upset that Tyrian killed their father Tywin). While Jaime fought well alongside the Starks and Targaryens in the battle against the dead, and had an intimate night with Brienne, Jaime felt too guilty over the sins he’s committed in the past, causing him to go back to Cersei and, tragically, die with her amid the destruction of King’s Landing.

12. Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)-“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.” The most hated woman of the series, Cersei was all about gaining power her way. Like her father Tywin, Cersei did all that was necessary to kill her enemies and rule the Seven Kingdoms, no matter who was on the throne. She loved her children, but was unable to guide them the right way. She loved her brother Jaime, but betrayed him by saying that she would kill him, without hesitation, if he ever went against her orders. She was also one of the culprits responsible for framing Ned Stark for treason. For all of her evil treachery, she failed the people of King’s Landing, as well as her rule on the iron throne, leading to her death alongside Jaime in Daenerys’s destruction of King’s Landing. While it would have been satisfying to see Arya or one of the Starks kill Cersei for the damage she caused towards Ned and his family, this Lannister sealed her own fate! As theorized earlier, Daenerys is the young woman who eventually took the throne away from Cersei.

13. Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju)-The Wildling who was initially an enemy of Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch. Once the Night King and the dead became the common enemy, Tormund became one of Jon’s closest comrades and friends. What made Tormund one of the best characters is his sense of humor, his beard, his funny looks, his desire to be with Brienne of Tarth, and his willingness to compromise with Jon in order to protect the Wildlings and Jon’s allies.

Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju)

14. Bronn (Jerome Flynn)-One of the funniest characters in the show, Bronn saved both Tyrian and Jaime Lannister quite a few times. While he was a soldier of fortune, he was also a noble fighter who followed orders. After losing his right hand, Jaime learned to fight again, thanks to Bronn’s skills. As Tyrian’s bodyguard, Bronn had a lot of respect for “the imp” and their companionship.

15. Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie)-A tough female warrior who served under Renly Baratheon until his untimely death. She became loyal to the Starks over the course of the series. She tried to help Caitlyn Stark by transporting Jaime Lannister back to King’s Landing in exchange for Arya and Sansa Stark. She also became Jaime’s companion over time after they saved each other’s lives during their long journey together to King’s Landing. She was also Sansa’s bodyguard after Sansa’s torturous time with Littlefinger and Ramsey Bolton. After seeing Brienne help the Stark sisters and Jaime Lannister, we can understand that Brienne is not only a strong and loyal knight, but also a unifying woman who was willing to serve and fight alongside those that intended to do good among the Seven Kingdoms. It was unfortunate that her loving moments with Jaime in the final season didn’t last, making her more emotional than ever. However, Brienne fittingly wrote Jaime’s accomplishments in the Kingsguard book to honor his memory.

16. Varys (Conleth Hill)-Similar to Tyrian, Varys was a neutral character who went from side to side, ruler to ruler. Although he worked with Littlefinger and the Lannisters, he was loyal to the Starks, especially Ned during his final hours. As he explained to Ned, he serves those that are truly fit to rule the Seven Kingdoms, which was why his loyalties shifted towards Daenerys. Varys, and Tyrian, were convinced that Daenerys could overthrow Cersei for the throne due to her power, her endeavor to end slavery, and her dragons, but since learning that Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen (Daenerys’s nephew and son of Rhaegar Targaryen), Varys told Tyrian that Jon was actually the true heir to the iron throne. Varys’s belief that Jon should claim the throne led to his death, courtesy of Daenerys and Drogon, her last remaining dragon. Varys’s death was one of Daenerys’s biggest mistakes, further conveying her transformation towards a mad queen in the final season.

Varys (Conleth Hill)

17. Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen)-The joker of this series, Littlefinger was all about seeking power and the throne. He did this by causing war between each family. “I warned you not to trust me” were his works to Ned Stark, framing him for treason against the Lannisters. He also had Jon Arynn, Ned’s friend, killed by Lady Arynn, who also ended up dying by Littlefinger’s hands. His interactions with Sansa Stark were his most vulnerable moments because, as he tried to use her and spy for the Lannisters, Sansa also used him in order to get Winterfell back from the Boltons. For all his treachery and backstabbing, Littlefinger’s downfall was satisfying because Sansa and Arya got back at him for the extensive damage he caused on the Stark family for six seasons.

Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen)

18. Ramsey Bolton (Iwan Rheon)-The most despicable character not only in this series, but perhaps in TV history! Ramsey’s cruel acts toward Theon Grayjoy, by means of castration and torture, as well as raping Sansa, mistreating other women (including his own), and murdering his own father, were some of the harshest in the show. He even had his father’s wife and her unborn child murdered so that he would solely rule Winterfell without having to worry about an heir. Thankfully, Jon Snow nearly punched Ramsey to death, and Sansa finished Ramsey off by feeding him to his own hounds in order to get back Winterfell from the murderous Boltons and their armies.

19. Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton)-Similar to his bastard son Ramsey, Roose Bolton was a treacherous and murderous character who conspired with the Lannisters and Walder Fray in destroying the Stark family, including Caitlyn, Robb, and their army during the Red Wedding. Shame he died by Ramsey’s hand and not by any of the remaining Starks, but he and Ramsey got what they deserved!

20. Theon Grayjoy (Alfie Allen)-A selfish man who grew up with the Starks, betrayed them, and endured endless torture from Ramsey Bolton. He redeemed himself immensely by saving Sansa from Ramsey, helping his sister Yara retrieve the Iron Islands from their evil uncle Euron, and defending Bran during the battle of Winterfell against the Night King. Theon died bravely for the people he loved most, making him one of the most redemptive characters of the series.

21. Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson)-A slave who found a path alongside Daenerys’s quest for the throne. He’s the leader of the unsullied, and he developed a loving relationship with Missandei. With Daenerys, Grey Worm proved to be a fierce and loyal warrior who could lead his army and fight in any battle to support his leader. With Missandei, Grey Worm learned how to love a woman who understood him and the troubles they both experienced in the past. When Grey Worm witnessed Missandei’s death, he was severely torn because he lost the love of his life, forcing him to go on a rage of violence during the battle for King’s Landing. Although Daenerys went into mad queen mode, he continued to remain loyal to her until her death by Jon Snow’s hand. With Missandei and Daenerys both gone, Grey Worm’s path is questionable, and left wide open. Will he lead his unsullied army into a dark path of violent warfare, or will there be hope for him and his men in the future? This could potentially be a sequel to the series!

22. Robb Stark (Richard Madden)-The Stark son who became king of the North after his father’s death. Like Ned, Robb was a strong soldier and ruler who cared for the Stark family and the people of Winterfell. Robb did everything in his power to avenge his father’s death by planning to attack King’s Landing and save his sisters. However, Robb lost an opportunity to increase his army by refusing to marry one of Walder Fray’s daughters. As a result, Robb loses his life, his army, his mother, and his fiancé and her unborn baby in the horrifying “Red Wedding” episode.

Robb Stark (Richard Madden)

23. Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley)-Strong and outspoken, Lady Stark loved nothing more than Ned and her children. She was not very motherly towards Jon Snow since he’s a bastard son, but Catelyn worried about everyone in Winterfell. In her attempts to work with Robb and his army to take down Cersei and her forces in King’s Landing, Catelyn was a diligent strategist. One of Catelyn’s most questionable commands (which upset Robb) was allowing Brienne of Tarth to take Jaime Lannister to King’s Landing in exchange for the Stark girls. While this endeavor transformed Jaime and Brienne, this may have been Catelyn’s and Robb’s downfall because Jaime was their bargaining chip, and by letting him go, Catelyn, Robb, and their forces became more vulnerable, leading to their shocking deaths in the Red Wedding thanks to Walder Fray and his army conspiring with the Lannisters. Catelyn proved that she was not only a good wife and mother, but a tough female ruler who fought to the death.

Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley)

24. Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and the Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow in Season 6; Struan Rodger in Season 4)-Ever since he got pushed out the window by Jaime Lannister after watching him and his sister Cersei get intimate, Bran Stark went through a supernatural journey. From a young boy to the three-eyed raven, Bran inhabited a powerful ability by gaining knowledge of everything that had happened in the past, as well as significant events involving the Stark family, including how young Ned Stark killed Ser Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy, and the truth of Jon Snow’s ancestry. Bran also learned about the Night King’s plan to kill him and all of humanity. Due to this, Bran ended up being a fitting choice to rule the Six Kingdoms (since Sansa rightfully rules Winterfell), but like his brother Jon, he didn’t want the throne, or anything for that matter, but he always cared very much about his family.

25. Melisandre (Carice van Houten)-The Red Woman was truly a beautiful wicked witch on the outside, but (as usual with certain witches) on the inside she’s an old woman who didn’t have time on her side. While she had powerful abilities, they were initially wasted on helping Stannis Baratheon and his army take down King’s Landing after Robert Baratheon’s death. Melisandre also convinced Stannis to make the absolutely atrocious decision to burn his daughter, Shireen, at the stake “in an attempt” to have a chance at winning the battle for the throne. However, Melisandre did redeem herself by reviving Jon Snow from the dead, and assisting the armies at Winterfell against the Night Walkers before dying an old woman. She had many faults, but served her purpose in the end.

Melisandre (Carice van Houten)

26. Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane)-After Robert Baratheon’s death, Stannis was technically the next one in line to rule the Seven Kingdoms. However, in order to take the throne, he had to take down the Lannisters. Stannis was a ruthless leader who did whatever necessary to grab the throne, but wasted his family, army, and resources by betting it all on Melisandre and relying on her decisions, ignoring Davos’s advice. Shame on Stannis, and good that he died by Brienne’s sword for what he and Melisandre did to Renly (Stannis’s younger brother and Brienne’s former Lord of Storm’s End).

Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane)

27. Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) -One of the warmest characters, Jon Snow’s best friend, an intelligent reader of history involving the Seven Kingdoms, the first man to kill a White Walker, and a valued member of the Night’s Watch. He also saved Jorah Mormont after he was infected by Greyscale.

Samwell Tarly (John Bradley)

28. Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha)-The cleverest character in the series who taught Arya to become a killer, operate like a spy, and take many faces. His origin story would be an intriguing prequel!

Image result for jaqen h'ghar
Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha)

29. Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg)-The clever, funny, energetic, and mischievous Olenna was surely a joy to watch. She pretended to become friends with the Lannisters, but was looking out for the Tyrell family, including her granddaughter Margaery. When Olenna realized that Joffrey was an abusive king for Margaery, she had the evil boy poisoned, and doesn’t admit to it until she drinks some viper from Jaime Lannister, making Olenna’s death one of the cleverest moments of the series (sticking it to Cersei and the Lannisters by not going down without some satisfaction).

30. Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal)-This is the idiot who came so close to completely killing Ser Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, for murdering his sister Elia and her children. Oberyn always wanted to get back at the Mountain and Tywin Lannister for what they did to his family, but, oh boy, did he come up short. EPIC FAIL!!

31. Yara Grayjoy (Gemma Whelan)-Theon’s sister was a fierce warrior who had a complicated relationship with her brother, and fought hard to retrieve the Iron Islands from Euron’s army. Despite Theon’s troubles, Yara always loved and supported him. Yara’s rugged, no-nonsense attitude, and her homosexuality made her an intriguing character, one that we could hopefully continue to see in any of the prequels or sequels to this series.

32. Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel)-Like Grey Worm, Missandei also grew up from the horrors of slavery. Her relationship with Grey Worm was one that blossomed out of love and compassion. After everything they’ve endured, they finally found a newfound purpose with Daenerys, who also fought to end slavery. Missandei’s death was shocking and tragic because, after being one of Daenerys’s closest advisors and falling in love with Grey Worm, her journey was sadly cut short. I would like to learn more about her past in a prequel!

Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel)

33. Walder Frey (David Bradley)-The old, vile, despicable bastard who was responsible for the shocking deaths of Robb, Catelyn, Talisa, and many in the Stark army during the Red Wedding. Not only was he crude towards the Starks, but also to his own family, treating his young wife and daughters like property. Thankfully, Arya got vengeance for her mother and brother by putting Fray and his army out of their misery!

34. Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy)-He may have been one of Ned’s oldest friends, but he was a brutish man’s man of a king. His marriage to Cersei was cold, and instead of properly ruling King’s Landing, all he cared about was getting drunk, going hunting, and watching knights fight and beat each other up. However, his personal (and final) moments with Ned were memorable because for Robert, Ned was his most loyal companion. Despite being around for only the first season (like Ned), his crude attitude and dark humor were a pleasure to watch.

35. The High Sparrow (Jonathon Pryce)-Before the Starks and Targaryens had their sights on King’s Landing, it was the High Sparrow who made Cersei Lannister suffer for her sins of adultery, and had her do the walk of shame. We must admit that the High Sparrow truly messed up Cersei good, before she got the better of him, his radical cult, and her enemies during the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor.

36. The Night King (Vladimir Furdik in Seasons 6-8; Richard Brake in Seasons 4-5) and The White Walkers-I’ve never seen “The Walking Dead,” but this is among the best walking dead I’ve ever seen in film and TV! They have caused so much mayhem for Jon Snow, Bran, Winterfell, the Wildlings, etc. The primary characters fought bravely against the dead, and Arya got the Night King good!

37. Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek)-The worst of the Greyjoys, Euron wanted the Iron Islands for himself. He killed his brother Aeron, and went to war against his nephew Theon and niece Yara. He also became Cersei’s closest ally and lover during the last two seasons (although she didn’t seem very interested in him) in order to help her rule the Seven Kingdoms. Euron also managed to kill Rhaegal, one of Daenerys’s dragons, as well as many of Dany’s unsullied soldiers. Although Theon or Yara would have given their uncle a good death, Jaime was the one to put Euron to rest. Euron’s evil laugh and his sinister plans to rule the kingdoms made him a memorably cruel villain to hate.

38. Osha (Natalia Tena)-A strong wildling who was initially held captive under the Stark family after she and other free folk were trying to kill Bran and steal from him. However, Osha became close to Bran and Rickon Stark, as well as Hodor, during their long journey away from Winterfell since Theon Greyjoy attempted to take over the North. Osha’s sassy attitude and strong skills (especially with a knife) made her a force to be reckoned with for anyone who got in her way, and risked her life to protect the young Stark boys.

39. Talisa Maegyr (Oona Chaplin)-The doctor who fell in love with Robb Stark, forcing him to give up his arranged marriage to one of Walder Fray’s daughters, which was set up in order to increase Robb’s army and raid King’s Landing. This resulted in the lovers’ deaths in the brutal “Red Wedding” episode. Despite the horrifying end to their mistaken and short-lived relationship, Talisa and Robb were very loving and affectionate towards one another, sparking one of the best chemistry-filled relationships of the series. Although brief, Talisa was a female character who stood out not only for her feminine beauty, but also for her occupation as a doctor on the battlefield, helping the wounded and the ill.

40. Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa)-Before becoming Aquaman, this hilarious dude appeared on Thrones for only the first season, but left a lasting impression with his large physique, funny lines (“a crown for a king”), and brutal killings (pouring hot gold on the cruel Viserys was brilliant). Despite their forced marriage, Drogo and Daenerys did fall in love for a short while. However, Drogo was a bad influence on Daenerys because, like the ruthless Dothraki lord, Dany became a powerful tyrant who wanted the throne for herself and her people, and no one else.

41. Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson)-The most despicably annoying character in the show alongside villains Ramsey and Euron. Joffrey was one to hate, for having Ned beheaded, for severely mistreating Tyrion, Sansa, and other women in King’s Landing, and for any blasphemy that came out of his mouth. How Cersei wanted this demon child to be king of the iron throne is beyond us! Thankfully, Olenna put the young bastard out of his misery, making his death one of the most deliciously hilarious of the series (those purple eyes and face)!

42. Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson in Seasons 4-8; Ian Whyte in Season 2; Conan Stevens in Season 1)-The gigantic, muscular, violent, and murderous brother of the Hound who was almost defeated by Oberyn Martell. He was an effective bodyguard for Tywin and Cersei Lannister, killing many souls, including Oberyn’s sister and her children. The Mountain’s skull-crushing of Oberyn was one of the most horrifying murders of the series. His rivalry with the Hound was a high point in the series due to the strength of both men, and the final fight between the brothers (Clegane-bowl) was brutal. While the Hound was at least able to escape King’s Landing and turn his life around, the Mountain was an evil force throughout for the Lannisters.

Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson)

43. Ygritte (Rose Leslie)-A wildling who loved Jon Snow, even though he was a member of the Night’s Watch. She was a tough fighter who fought for her people, but was torn about whether or not she should kill Jon. Her loss was an emotional one, especially for Jon because she was his first lover.

44. Shae (Sibel Kekilli)-The woman Tyrion loved most, until she broke his heart by being with Tywin. Although she was a prostitute, Tyrion treated Shae with love and respect. Their love was short-lived because Tywin forced Tyrion to marry Sansa. Shae was memorable for her tenderness toward Tyrion, and her efforts to assist Sansa during her difficult time with the Lannisters in King’s Landing.

Shae (Sibel Kekilli)

45. Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma), Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes), and Nymeria Sand (Jessica Henwick)-Ellaria was a loving partner to Oberyn, but she and Oberyn’s bastard daughters (the Sand Snakes) were unsuccessful in seeking vengeance for his death due to Cersei and Euron Greyjoy’s overpowering armies. Ellaria and Tyene were left to suffer and die in King’s Landing due to Cersei’s outrage over her own daughter, Myrcella, being poisoned by Ellaria. Like Oberyn, Ellaria and their daughters were not only physically beautiful, but they were also strong warriors who fought with honor and determination. I can imagine a whole prequel series on Oberyn, Ellaria, and the Sand Snakes!

46. Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick)-Along with Hodor and Osha, Meera was one of Bran’s greatest protectors during their long journey together. Meera was a strong and skilled survivor who slowly developed feelings for Bran. However, during their final moments together, Bran didn’t show much emotion when Meera said her services were no longer required, but that she didn’t want to leave Bran since she, her brother, and Hodor risked their lives to defend him. While Bran and Meera cared for each other, they both knew that the Stark boy wasn’t the same since he became the three-eyed raven. Bran’s transformation caused him to become emotionally detached from Meera, his family, and everyone else, even though he truly loved those closest to him. While Bran became king of the six kingdoms, Meera was never heard from again (pity). I’m sure many of us want a sequel in which Bran and Meera reunite and try to connect with each other once more!

Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick)

47. Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer)-The Tyrell who married both of Cersei’s sons, each while under the throne. She was a major nemesis for Cersei due to her beauty and persistence to take the title of queen away from her.

48. Gilly (Hannah Murray)-Gilly proved to be a supportive and caring companion towards Samwell, making their love story one of the most heartwarming aspects of the series.

49. Hodor (Kristian Nairn; Sam Coleman as young Hodor)-The tall and strong stablehand in Winterfell who always cared for the Stark family. Hodor’s name also represented the character’s tragic fate, as well as his necessity and determination to save Bran. Hodor was a gentle giant who will be greatly missed.

50. Syrio Forel (Miltos Yerolemou)-Arya’s sword instructor in season 1 who taught her valuable lessons of fighting and swordplay, including how to perform and deceive an opponent during battle. He also gave Arya a memorable line that would linger throughout Arya’s journey: “What do we say to the god of death? Not today.”

52. Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion-The powerful but deadly dragons who endured countless battles and obstacles with their mother, Daenerys. As Dany’s journey grew, so did the dragons, becoming bigger in size, as they followed Dany and her armies tackle major enemies. Whenever they flew, everyone would be left in awe, astonishment, and fear. Sadly, each dragon suffered emotional circumstances. Viserion would turn into an ice dragon (thanks to the Night King), Rhaegal was shot down by Euron Greyjoy, and Drogon was forced to destroy King’s Landing, as well as witnessing Dany die by the hands of Jon Snow. After losing his brothers and his mother, many might have thought Drogon would kill Jon, but after losing his brothers and his mother, Drogon empathized with Jon and understood that Dany’s quest for the throne made her a tyrant, a dictator, and a mad queen killer. This caused Drogon to rightfully destroy the iron throne, and take Dany’s body away from the decimated King’s Landing. We hope Drogon somehow finds peace after all the bloody carnage and chaos, perhaps rejoining Jon and Tyrian since he and the other dragons had an intriguing bond with both men.

53. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont (James Cosmo)-The tough leader of the Night’s Watch who always valued every member of the group, including Jon Snow and his comrades. He taught the men of the Night’s Watch that it was essential to lead a life of duty and honor, and to not let personal attachments and relationships interfere with their code of conduct.

54. Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney)-A strong, brave, and loyal Kingsguard who served under Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters, until Cersei and King Joffey forced him to retire. Selmy, in honorable fashion, showed his disgust towards everyone in King’s Landing before walking away to later assist Daenerys, her army, and fellow comrade Jorah.

55. Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman in Seasons 4-6; Ed Skrein in Season 3)-A tough warrior and pit fighter who killed his superiors of the Second Sons sellsword company in order to serve Daenerys as her bodyguard, advisor, and lover. He had a charismatic sense of humor and a rugged, no-nonsense toughness in his character. Too bad he and Daenerys’s romantic relationship was cut short after four seasons. It would have been interesting to see him fight against the White Walkers, as well as how he would react to Daenerys’s relationship with Jon Snow, and her descent towards madness and tyranny in the final season. Nonetheless, Daario had great fights and battles. His character could return in the prequel to provide even more backstory to his history with the Second Sons sellsword company, or a sequel involving his future battles.

56. Eddison Tollett (Ben Crompton) and Grenn (Mark Stanley)-Edd was one of Jon Snow’s closest comrades and friends under the Night’s Watch. Edd fought alongside Jon in many battles, including the Wildlings, and the battle against the Night King, where he was (sadly) killed instantly. He was a tough warrior with a sense of humor. Jon and the Night’s Watch will miss him greatly. Grenn was also a strong, courageous warrior who backed Jon and his comrades in close fights, risking his life against the Wildlings.

57. Gendry (Joe Dempsie)-A bastard son of Robert Baratheon who started out as a blacksmith in King’s Landing, and then joined the Brotherhood Without Banners (since all of Robert’s bastard sons were ordered to be executed by King Joffrey). Gendry was also taken by Lady Melisandre in an attempt to use his blood to cast a spell on King Joffrey so Gendry’s uncle, Stannis, can take the iron throne. Davos rescued Gendry by sending him away from Stannis so he isn’t sacrificed. He and Arya also became very close throughout the series, eventually making love to each other in the final season. Gendry heavily assisted Jon Snow, Davos, Arya, and their armies by making effective weapons (dragonglass) used to defeat the White Walkers. While Arya rejected Gendry’s proposal, perhaps they could cross paths again in a sequel where we witness Arya’s journey to the West of Westeros, and Gendry’s rule at Storm’s End.

58. Grand Maester Pycelle (Julian Glover)-This old fool was a selfish bastard who also betrayed Ned, argued with Cersei, was hypocritical about sinning by being with young women, got upset when King’s Landing wasn’t ruled properly, and pretty much only cared about his own interests.

59. Ser Meryn Trant (Ian Beattie)-The despicable and cruel Kingsguard under Robert, Joffrey, and Tommen Baratheon. He killed Syrio, who was protecting Arya after Ned’s arrest. A cruel bastard who mistreated women and killed those closest to Arya, including Syrio and Ned’s army. Arya thankfully got her revenge by killing Trant in bloody and deceiving fashion.

60. Styr (Yuri Kolokolnikov) and Orell (Mackenzie Crook)-Two of the strongest wildlings who fought against and were defeated by Jon Snow. 62. Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free in Seasons 5-6; Aimee Richardson in Seasons 1-2)-After Joffrey’s delicious death, Tommen was unfortunately chosen to rule King’s Landing. Although he was a weak king who was blinded by the rivalry between his mother Cersei and his queen Margaery Tyrell, Tommen at least wasn’t a brash, brutal brat like Joffrey.

Related image
Tommen Baratheon (Dean-Charles Chapman)

Tommen, Myrcella, and Joffrey were the biological children of Jaime Lannister (not Robert Baratheon) due to Jaime and Cersei’s love affair. While Myrcella found love with Trystane in the Water Gardens in Dorne run by House Martell, she’s sadly killed by Ellaria in order to get back at Cersei for Oberyn’s death. Unlike the crude Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen were sweeter and kinder Lannister children who each wanted to fall in love, and rule their household with peaceful ambitions. Sending Myrcella away from Cersei was Tyrian’s biggest mistake (even though he was trying to protect her from his sister).

63. Ser Alliser Thorne (Owen Teale)-The biggest pain in the ass for Jon Snow throughout his entire run on the series. Ser Alliser was a bully who disliked Jon’s methods of ruling the Night’s Watch, and initially made Jon a steward instead of a knight. After killing Jon Snow (who was then resurrected by Melisandre), Jon rightfully executed Alliser for treason.

64. Olly (Brenock O’Connor)-The boy whose family was killed by Styr and his army of Wildlings. For a boy who lost his home and parents, Olly had some fortunate moments. He saved Jon’s life (though sadly resulting in Ygritte’s death), and served alongside the Night’s Watch by becoming Jon’s personal steward. Olly’s emotional stabbing of Jon Snow was heartbreaking, considering that Olly looked up to Jon, but felt betrayed when Jon wanted to form a truce with the Wildlings so that they would fight together to defeat the Night King and army of the dead. Olly’s hanging was also devastating because Jon truly appreciated the boy and tried to treat him as one of his own comrades. However, Olly’s betrayal forced Jon to take extreme action.

65. Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman)-Podrick served as squire for both Tyrian and Brienne. He had a nice pleasantness about him that made everyone around him feel content. He bravely saved Tyrian’s life during the battle against Stannis Baratheon in King’s Landing. Podrick formed a nice companionship with Brienne of Tarth when they were searching for Arya and Sansa Stark.

66. Maester Aemon (Peter Vaughan)-One of the wiser characters of the series, Aemon was the head maester at Castle Black. Similar to Jeor Mormont, Aemon advised the men at the Night’s Watch, including Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly, and treated them with respect. Aemon was always supportive toward Jon, especially when the Stark family went through tough times. Samwell and Gilly also cared for Aemon on his death bed. Aemon was also the great uncle of Daenerys Targaryen, and, unknown to many, Jon’s great-great uncle. Maester Aemon was an example of a wise leader, advisor, and father figure for many men in the Night’s Watch who struggled through the horrors of war and battle.

67. Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) and Thoros of Myr (Paul Kaye)- Beric was the leader of Brotherhood Without Banners, and Thoros was Beric’s most loyal friend and companion. The Hound initially hated these guys, but they would eventually become comrades in the fight against the White Walkers. Along with the Hound, Beric and Thoros provided great comic relief, as well as great fights and camaraderie. Thoros also had a great supernatural ability to bring Beric back from the dead countless times. Sadly, both of these greats would not survive the White Walkers, but they died with honor.

68. Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey)-Cousin of Jorah Mormont and niece of Jeor Mormont, Lyanna was the hard spoken head of her household who devoted her loyalties to Jon Snow and the Stark family in Winterfell when it was reclaimed from the Boltons. Although a young girl, Lyanna was never fearful in expressing her thoughts and doubts to Jon concerning the battle against the Night King, and Jon’s loyalties toward Daenerys. She sadly died young, but fought hard against the dead, taking a giant white walker with her before dying from her injures.

69. Shireen Baratheon (Kerry Ingram)-Shireen may have been the only daughter of Stannis Baratheon, but she was loved most by Davos, whom she taught to read. Davos and Shireen developed a friendly father-daughter bond that became one of the most pleasant friendships of the series. Shireen had a beautiful soul and a kind spirit. Shireen’s sacrifice (due to fatheads Stannis and Melisandre) was a disturbing and emotional loss, which greatly affected Davos, and made Melisandre feel guilty about her actions.

70. Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony), Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones), and Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon)-Renly and Loras were both men who came from cruel and ruthless families. Renly served under his brother, King Robert Baratheon, in King’s Landing until Robert’s sudden death. Renly knew how dangerous Cersei was, which is why he offered Ned Stark an army for protection, but Ned refused. After Ned’s death, Renly left King’s Landing with his squire, Loras Tyrell. Not only did Renly have powerful connections with the Tyrell family, but he was also in a relationship with Loras. Brienne of Tarth loved Renly and tried to get his attention, but was unsuccessful due to Renly’s love for Loras. Renly’s death (thanks to Stannis and Melisandre’s quest for the iron throne) was a hard loss, especially for Brienne. Loras also took Renly’s death hard, and was later imprisoned by the High Sparrow for adultery. Loras forcibly joined the High Sparrow after confessing to his relationships with Renly and other men. Lancel Lannister also confessed to his intimate relationship with cousin Cersei, and became one of the most radical members of the High Sparrow who intimidated, threatened, and punished many people for their adulterous sins.

71. Locke (Noah Taylor)-A cruel and foul-mouthed swordsman who was known as Roose Bolton’s best hunter. He is one of the best men to give Jaime Lannister a good beating, as well as cutting off his sword hand. Locke also sneakily invaded the Night’s Watch in order to eliminate the Starks, but was careless. His men were overpowered by Jon Snow’s army, and Locke was killed by Bran with the help of Hodor.

74. Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd) and Doreah (Roxanne McKee)-Viserys was the older brother of Daenerys, whom he always mistreated. He always held Daenerys back, and treated her with cruelty, using her as property to sell to Khal Drogo and the Dothraki in order to obtain an army to reclaim the iron throne (which belonged to the father of the Targaryens, the Mad King). For being demanding and cruel towards Daenerys, Drogo deliciously killed Viserys by pouring hot gold over his head (“a crown for a king”).

Doreah was Daenerys’s handmaiden under Viserys’s command. She slept with Viserys, who treated her as horribly as Dany. Doreah taught Dany how to seduce Khal Drogo in bed, and was intrigued by Dany’s dragons. Doreah and Dany treated each other like friends, until Doreah betrayed Dany in a failed attempt to take her dragons. Doreah ultimately paid the price for it.

75. Honorable Mention-These are the characters who are briefly shown, discussed, and/or are presented in flashbacks, and are definitely deserving of prequels:

Brother Ray (Ian McShane)-Although only appearing in one episode, he was the man who helped guide the Hound toward a path of redemption. His character was short-lived but memorable.

Howland Reed (Leo Woodruff), Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi as a young adult in Seasons 6-7; Cordelia Hill as a young child in Season 6), and Rhaegar Targaryen (Wilf Scolding)-Ned Stark, with help from fellow comrade Howland Reed, killed Dayne in order to rescue his sister Lyanna from the Tower of Joy. Lyanna sadly died of childbirth, conceiving Aegon Targaryen (Jon Snow), son of Rhaegar Targaryen. Rhaegar was supposed to marry Elia Martell, but instead secretly married Lyanna Stark, who Robert Baratheon truly loved. Believing that Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar, Robert killed Rhaegar in single combat. After Rhaegar and Lyanna died, Ned took in Aegon as his own son and named him Jon Snow.

Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle as adult; Matteo Elezi as child)-Jon’s uncle, Benjen, was the first ranger of the Night’s Watch, and was always loyal to Ned and the Stark children, even Jon, despite him being a bastard child. Benjen saved Bran Stark and Meera Reed from the dead, and risked his life for Jon later on from other dead beings. Benjen was only shown a handful of times, but he had a powerfully quiet presence.

Yoren (Francis Magee)-Yoren was also a recruiter of the Night’s Watch, and saved Arya, keeping her safe after Ned’s execution. Like Benjen, Yoren was a subtle, watchful protector for the Starks.

Yoren (Francis Magee)

Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds)-Mance was a member of the Night’s Watch, but then went against them and became the defiant leader of the Wildlings (“King Beyond The Wall”). After Jon and the Night’s Watch defeated the Free Folk, Jon tried to convince Mance to surrender to Stannis, but refused and was executed.

Doran Martell (Alexander Siddig) and Areo Hotah (DeObia Oparei)-Doran was the Prince of Dorne and the head of House Martell. Captain Areo Hotah was Doran’s head of the Martell guard. Both men were sadly cut short from the series when Ellaria and her daughters rebelled and killed them for failing to take action against the Lannisters in order to avenge the deaths of Doran’s siblings, Oberyn and Elia, and Elia’s children.

Ros (Esme Bianco)-Ros was the beautiful and charming prostitute from the North who seduced many men, including Tyrian Lannister and Theon Greyjoy, as well as many women. Selyse Florent or Selyse Baratheon (Tara Fitzgerald in Seasons 3-5; Sarah MacKeever in Season 2)-The ridiculous and shameful wife of Stannis Baratheon who supported Melisandre more than her young daughter Shireen. She had no love for her child or her husband. She deeply believed in Melisandre’s ritualistic and methodical methods of somehow claiming the iron throne for Stannis, including burning Shireen alive. Disgraceful woman! Selyse, Stannis, and Melisandre would eventually pay the price for their sins in death.

Jon Arryn (John Standing), Lysa Arryn (Katie Dickie), and Robin Arryn (Lino Facioli)-The Arryns are, without question, the most annoying family in the series! Jon Arryn, the head of his household, was a companion of Robert Baratheon, and a friend of Ned Stark’s. After Lord Arryn’s death, Ned investigated to find out what happened to him. Unfortunately, Jon Arryn was poisoned by his wife, the crazy Lysa, due to persuasion by joker Petyr Baelish. Petyr and Lysa were secretly in love, but as Petyr told Lysa before killing her, he only truly loved Lysa’s sister, Catelyn Stark. All Lysa ever cared about was obtaining power and control of her household for herself and her son Robin. She was cruel to her sister and the Starks as well. The rivalry between the Starks and the Lannisters primarily started due to the death of Jon Arryn, and Baelish causing each household to fight and/or blame each other. Along with Lysa, Robin was a crazy one, a son who was childish and constantly breastfed. Thankfully, as he got older, he became a little more mature, but still a brat.
